Bounty Hunter William "Cobra" Staubs Wants His Freedom Back
One of the people at the center of the Haleigh Cummings case is William Eugene Staubs, aka "Cobra," a bounty hunter from Fort Lauderdale, FL, who has been involved in several high profile cases over the years, including the O.J. Simpson case and the take-down of an alleged terrorist in Fort Campbell, KY. |

There is something suspect about this whole story. Why was this "Cobra" arresting this defendant in the first place? The defendant never failed to appear and there was no warrant for his arrest, right? Florida law establishes 5 breaches that can result in the re commitment of the bond principal to jail without returning the premium. Did this guy commit any of the 5 breaches?

The story is not there. Anyway, what really sticks out to me is his statement about how " he is equal to a police officer". Oh, no your not! You only have authority over the defendant if you or your surety wrote the bond. You can only surrender him if he violates one of the Saline Conditions of Bail or if you give back the premium you can surrender him.
I think the trouble begins when an agent or a "bounty hunter" thinks in his mind that he is law enforcemment.
